You don’t need to create a 2-year plan or develop any time management skills. You don’t even need to have your shit together. Simply follow these three tips.
1. Give fewer fucks
It’s ok to give a fuck here and there, but it’s not ok to stress yourself out over nonsense you shouldn’t even be thinking about. This means eliminating all distractions.
Sometimes we go the extra mile for people, try to fix things we cannot change, or change things we have no control over. But you have to accept that some things are better left untouched.
If someone or something is making your life more difficult than it needs to be, walk away. Anxiety, stress, and negative energy are all contagious. You might not realize it today, but eventually, it will catch up to you.
You are not super-human. It isn’t your job to solve other people’s problems. Giving too many fucks about the rest of the world will only interrupt the flow of your own experience.
The key is to find a way to minimize any unnecessary stress from your life. Focus your energy on your family, success, and happiness. Everything else is irrelevant.
P.S., you can be sympathetic to external circumstances, without letting it consume you.
2. Define your goals
In order to achieve your goals, you should be able to identify what your goals are. Whenever I desperately think I need something, I try to come up with a few reasons why.
I mean, if you’re going to potentially sacrifice every single thing for that one goal, you should definitely have a few good reasons. Even if your reason is ‘to be rich’ or ‘to find love’ As long as it makes sense to you, that’s all that matters.
Make a small list identifying all your wants. Then, understand why you want them in the first place. Write a brief note next explaining the reason(s) for it.
Many of us want things for no reason at all, or for all the wrong reasons. When you chase things for the wrong reasons, it almost never pans out.
It’s like working out because you want to look like an Instagram model or achieve the ‘perfect’ body, and not at all because you want to feel healthy. When your mind isn’t 100% there, you won’t receive the results you’re hoping for. Your personal reasons matter in this journey. Otherwise, you’re just fooling yourself.
3. Dream it. Visualize it. Create it.
Finally, turn your thoughts into reality. My professor once told me, every night before you go to sleep, you should always envision where you hope to be. If you’re hoping to graduate soon, picture yourself on stage, wearing your cap and gown. Think about how you’re going to feel that moment.
If your wish is to get married or find love, visualize it. Think about the kind of love you want, what makes you happy, where you want to be in a few years.
Don’t merely think that you can achieve it, but truly believe that you WILL achieve it. Transcend those thoughts into things. If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody else will.
If you haven’t realized by now that our thoughts and actions influence reality, you need to change the way you look at things. Your worldview and self-concept are both crucial.
