3 Ways To Reduce Stress and Improve Your Mood

Are you taking the necessary steps to control stress? If not, it can result in an array of physical and mental health issues. Stress is somewhat unavoidable but entirely manageable. Although there isn’t a permanent solution to ridding ourselves from feeling stressed all together, there are plenty of active ways to manage it. Here are three ways to help manage stress, improve your mood, and feel good.

Since stress affects our body, behavior, and mood, it’s so important to be able to recognize common symptoms so that you can better manage them. You might think your reoccurring headaches and anxiety are normal, when in fact they might be reflecting a much deeper issue.

The symptoms of unhealthy stress levels are never-ending, but some of the most common include anxiety, headaches, and excessive eating or under-eating. Acknowledging your body during intense, stressful situations can help reduce stress and improve your wellbeing.

Whenever I’m feeling extremely stressed out from work, school, or my relationship, I take a moment to collect my thoughts. Being under stress for prolonged periods of time is not  an option for me, because it affects behavior, productivity, creativity, and it makes me overthink.

Here are three stress-management tips for every day:

5-minute meditation:

Sit a quiet space with your eyes open or closed, your back straight, and your hands on your knees or thighs. Pay attention to your breath. When thoughts or anxieties arise, let them pass and acknowledge them without clinging onto them.

Then, return to your breathing. If you have a hard time focusing on your breath, you can think, “inhale& exhale.” Do not try to stop thinking, just focus on returning to awareness of breathing.

Afterward, slowly get up and see if you can keep the same energy and sense of awareness throughout the day. There are many different mediation styles and postures, and you should find one that works best for you!

According to health professionals, these are some of the best stress management practices:  physical activity, surrounding yourself with good company, reading, listening to music, etc.

 Address, process, resolve

The best way to solve a problem is by understanding why it exists in the first place. The same goes for coping with stress. If you’re experiencing high levels of stress or anxiety, there might be a way to manage it through self-understanding.

Instead of disregarding your anxieties, you should try addressing your concerns. Take a moment to write down or think in your head what is frustrating you.

Identify one or more things that are stressing you out and the implications of the issues.

  1. Say or write down what’s happening, and (address)
  2. express how its making you feel (process)
  3. explore the steps you will take to resolve (resolve)

By doing this every day it can reduce problems and help you unwind from stress. Sometimes the key to managing stress is through exploring ourselves.

Mood enhancing actiivty

Another way to relieve stress is by doing something that stimulates you. For some, it’s exercising, walking, or doing something creative like writing or dancing. It doesn’t matter how you choose to cope with stress, as long as it makes sense to you, makes you feel better, and relieves you from pain. The purpose is to find something that you enjoy doing.
